Concierge of Chic: An interview with Lisa Fine

I have known Lisa Fine all my life - she and my mother went to boarding school together, and to me she has always been my mother's very fabulous friend who travels the world, writes, decorates, and designs. But it is her sense of humor that I love the most (you will see hints of it in the interview). In addition to Lisa's current textiles line, she and Carolina Irving started Irving & Fine, a clothing line full of fantastic tunics, blouses, and coats with prints and embroidery.

Cannon Lewis: What is your inspiration for the Irving & Fine clothing?
Lisa Fine: Ottoman & Eastern European folk costume and old Yves Saint Laurent.

CL: What made you decide to start a clothing line?
LF: On a whim. I couldn't find what I wanted so I started making blouses for myself and so many people liked them so I made more.

CL: What is your favorite piece from the Irving & Fine collection?
LF: The Tangier Peasant Blouse.

CL: What's next for Irving & Fine?
LF: To have an e-commerce site.

CL: Name a lesson you have learned from starting your own business?
LF: Never think too hard or you will never do it.

CL: You have an apartment in Paris and in New York, and travel to India and Texas all the time. If you had to pick one place, where would you be?
LF: I don't have to pick at the moment. If it ever happens, I might not have a choice - it will probably pick me.

CL: You have traveled everywhere and seen so many ways of life. How has this shaped you as a person?
LF: It keeps me from getting bored.

CL: Where do you go to clear your head?
LF: India - because there is so much chaos going on around, that as chaotic as I might be, it is still calming.

CL: What is something you haven't done but have always wanted to do?
LF: A lot of things. These are all so politically incorrect, but I'm dying to do more trips in Central Asia. I'd like to go to Uzbekistan, Iran, Afghanistan, Cambodia, and Peru.

CL: What is a funny memory you have of my mother from high school?
LF: We were all staying at a friend's older sister's house, and your mom had a date with this guy who we thought was silly and such a goose. So after she left to go on the date, we re-configured the sprinkler system so that when they came home and he was about to kiss her at the door, we turned it on, and they both got sprayed. We chased him off.
CL: What is your favorite piece of Cannon Lewis jewelry?
LF: I love the silver baby spoon and the captivate necklaces.

At this point in my life I have one child and a labradoodle named after me (I knew the owner when I was little, and as fate would have it, 15 years later when I heard someone yelling "Cannon" at the dog park, I met my namesake).

Cannon Lewis: You have a strong background in children's clothing design from you stints with babyGap, Bonpoint, and Marie Chantal. What made you decide to move from clothing to paper?
Kirby Legate: Well, I still dabble in the clothing industry and hope to get back into it very soon. I never really made a choice to leave it, but the stationery area of my business took off and demanded more and more of my time. Now, 6 years later, I finally have my business arranged in a way that I have time to get back to some of the others areas I love- clothing being one of them.

CL: What is the story behind your company's name, Petite Alma?
KL: Precious Alma... When I was designing for Bonpoint in Paris, our fit models came in on Thursdays. Our 4 year old fit model was Alma. I'll never forget her prancing around the studio speaking french and teasing me about my accent. Not shy at all with a spunky little personality. I looked forward to Thursdays, just to see little Alma. She was the perfect muse for my company.

CL: In five years from now, where do you see your company?
KL: Wow, that's a tough one because I was taught a long time ago to think BIG even if you are small. There are so many things we want to do, but you never know which ones will actually materialize. I never thought I would be in the stationery world, but it just happened, so maybe there is something out there I can't even image right now. Ideally, we would love to have a collection of baby bedding, a layette/ children's clothing line, petite alma toys and games, more letterpress, gift sets and offer interior design for children's rooms. We will see which ones we get to!

CL: When I started designing jewelry, it was my love for the product and creative outlet that drove me to then start a company, but it has been the business side that has kept me going. Name one business lesson you have learned from starting your own company.
KL: The one who looses it, loses. (my dad taught me that one) It's true- in the midst of a business argument, if you loose it, you're done. It's more acceptable for men to loose it because they are supposed to be the tough guy, but when a woman looses it, people just roll their eyes and say we are being emotional.

CL: Where do you go for inspiration?
KL: I live in NYC, so I'm lucky to be surrounded by creative people and unique boutiques. I get a lot of my clothing inspiration just from seeing what people are wearing on the streets.

CL: If you could live somewhere else for six months, where would you go and what would you do?
KL: I'd go back to Paris. I would take french lessons in the mornings, explore in the afternoons and eat lots of macaroons!

CL: Where are some of your favorite places to shop and eat in New York City?
KL: I am a boutique shopper, so I don't frequent the big stores like Barney's and Bergdorf very often. I love Otte and Nili Lotan in Tribeca and Zadig and Voltaire in the Meatpacking district. As for food, I love the Harrison in Tribeca and for a really special dinner, I love Aquavit. Perry Street is one of my favorites too.

CL: What advice do you have for someone just starting out in your field?
KL: Expect the best (from Norman Vincent Peale's inspiring book, The Power of Positive Thinking) and believe you can do it!

CL: How would you describe your personal style?
KL: Simple. Clean. Neutrals with pops of color. Classic old styles mixed with modern accents. Informal.

CL: If you could have one piece of Cannon Lewis jewelry, which one would it be and why?
KL: I like the leaf earrings with diamonds because they are elegant, but casual enough to wear everyday. But it's hard to narrow it down to one!

I had plans to meet my friend for dinner at Stanton Social in the Lower East Side and it was raining. Saw a cab and there are never cabs in the rain - thought I was lucky. Took the cab, 45 minutes later still in cab and gridlocked. Got out of cab and took subway. Sat next to Adele. She likes the name Miranda though, not because of Sex in the City but because she has always loved it. So her boyfriend calls her Miranda. I told her I am from Texas. Her face lit up and she told me her boyfriend is from Oklahoma. I have been to Oklahoma once and it is NOT Texas, but I smiled and went with it. Told her to take her boyfriend to Hill Country BBQ because that is the only real BBQ in the City. My new friend got off on her stop, and then a few stops later I got off the train, walked for a good 10 minutes in the rain, arrived over-fashionably late (1hr 15min), but it was a wonderful time and my cab back took 20 minutes total.

The peculiar thing is this: I love New York even in the rain and inconvenience. My first thought was as I got off the train and was walking to the restaurant, arriving later than I think I have ever been, was this: I am so glad I brought and umbrella, and how wonderful is it that it is so small that it fits in my clutch purse.

In the Limelight

I was in Chelsea and took a wrong turn and stumbled upon the Limelight Marketplace. Originally an Episcopal Church built in 1885, it was later deconsecrated and turned into a nightclub in the '80s and '90s that got shut down and now has been turned into the most charming collection of 60 mini shops. There are furniture shops, clothing boutiques, and tiny bakery counters, and a specialty deli. Marie Belle (some of my favorite chocolate) has a treat cart there and the whole place is completely charming.

Like the rest of New York City, I have been bombarded with ads and mentions of Piperlime in the taxis, in WWD, and twitter to name a few. So I guess I am living proof that advertising blitzes do work, because I went to the Piperlime Pop-Up Store in Soho yesterday to see what this was all about.

I was beyond impressed. If you are in New York, GO. I have never bought anything from Piperlime's website, but that will be changing soon because the pop-up store really brought everything to life. They merchandise with an array of price points and I was especially impressed with the quality of the less expensive items. Sometimes it is hard to translate clothing and accessories on a website (I know that first hand) but I have to say - even if you are not sure how their items are going to translate - from what I saw yesterday - it will be better than what you see pictured (and with free shipping & return shipping you have nothing to lose)!

At the Piperlime Pop-Up store they also give you a chance to style a look with the store's clothing and accessories (my inner stylist was loving this part). Yesterday's theme was "faux fur" where I had to incorporate a faux piece with my look. They take pictures of each person's look and judge them at the end of the day. Each day the winner receives a $100 gift certificate to Piperlime.

I have known Patti Flowers my entire life. My grandfather and her father fished together every week and as a little girl I would go to her studio and watch her design beautiful dresses. Years later when I got married she designed my wedding gown. Patti's designs have a timeless and sophisticated air while accentuating the mystery and beauty of the female form. Cannon Lewis: As a clothing designer, how did you decide to move into the more niche market of bridal and evening wear?
Patti Flowers: Evening wear was my first love, with the beautiful fabrics, details and endless design possibilities. Bridal found me when I was asked to design wedding gowns for clients. Not long after, I was invited to be the In- House Designer for the Stanley Korshak Bridal Salon, and a new love began.

CL: Who is your style icon?
PF: There are so many. For designers, Coco Chanel and Edith Head. Chanel's classic yet avant-garde approach to design and Edith Head's feminine and glamorous designs for film. As for individuals (this may sound cliché), but Audrey Hepburn for her classic elegance and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy for her understated modern approach. Also Jan Strimple, with her swan like beauty, who embraces every design she wears.

CL: Name a few of your favorite fabrics to use and why?
PF: Double-Faced Silk Satin and Silk Velvet, for the richness and lush textures. These fabrics are wonderful to create interesting design lines and draping, yet embellish beautifully with beading and embroidery.

CL: If you could go back in time and design for one era or decade, which one would it be and why?
PF: The fifties (not because of Mad Men) because design was so feminine and flattered the female body. During this era, women presented themselves in a graceful, elegant manner. The designs whether day or evening were beautifully tailored. However, while I was born In 1956 I would not like to be a professional woman during that era due to the limitations placed on women by others and themselves.

CL: There are many bridal and evening wear designers, but you are consistently considered one of the best in Texas, and sought out by those who could have their pick of any designer. What is it about your designs that make them distinct and desired?
PF: Thank you for your kinds words. It is such an honor to be part of this special time in a bride and her family's life. Since you were one of my brides, I hope you agree with this, but I believe in designing for the bride, so that the bride is the focus not the design of the gown, I want every one at the wedding to say "what a beautiful bride," not "what a beautiful gown".

CL: Tell us about a business lesson you have learned from owning your own company.
PF: My father was right, I should have listened and taken business courses in college. No matter what line of work you go into or what you study, everyone needs to also study business.

CL:What advice do you have for people looking to have a career in fashion design?
PF: Get an education in design and business. Work in the industry in various capacities not just design so you have a good understanding of all the areas surrounding fashion design.

CL: If you could live anywhere for six months where would you go and what would you do?
PF: An isolated place in the mountains. No computers,television, etc. I would sketch, journal, meditate, connect with nature and be able to turn everything off and re-discover in a quiet and creative place. The only problem - my husband likes the beach.

CL: How would you describe your personal style?
PF: Classic with a current updated edge. I love to add a modern look to dresses, suits, evening gowns that have been in my closet for years with new or vintage accessories.

CL: If you could have one piece of Cannon Lewis jewelry, which one would it be and why?
PF: I am very fortunate to have several "vintage " Cannon Lewis pieces and each time I wear one I always get many compliments. I would like to have at least one piece from each of the Cannon Lewis collections, because each collection has such a different feel and speaks to me in a unique way. I particularly love the strength of the Captivate Collection and a necklace from this collection is definitely on my Christmas wish list.
Yet I also sincerely want a piece from the Life Collection with the quote from the designer's Grandmother about Willows: " Be a Willow, Not an Oak. Willows Bend, Oaks break"
It is definitely best to be a "Willow" in the Fashion Industry.

My Living Room: A Closer Look

I was sitting on the couch and noticed how pretty the roses were in the window. So much has changed though - so I give you two pictures: one a view of my living room as I immediately saw it, and second, upon closer inspection what I found. A baby does change everything but these changes make me smile.

I have some news that I am so excited to share - a new website is on its way! Robert Milam did a fantastic job designing my new logo that captures the essence of my brand (my new logo is featured at the top of this blog) and now he is back for the website design and I can't wait to see what the final product will look like. Robert pays an extreme attention to detail and is a talented artist and there is no one else I would trust more with this project.

The goal of the new site is to give the user a more intimate understanding of the story behind the jewelry pieces and what inspires the designer. The new site will be coming out sometime late fall and I will be busy working on all the details that are involved with getting a new site up.

Homecoming

After a 5 hour flight with two strollers, a baby and a dog, we are in the taxi on our way home after three months away. I remember when I used to visit here and it seemed a bit overwhelming and larger than life. Now I'm in the cab just looking up at the buildings and the people on the streets and smiling - New York I've missed you and its so nice to be back!

Surfing Big Dume

Big Dume is one of my favorite places to go in Malibu. My husband would surf all day if he could, and on this afternoon I went with him. I got this great picture of him surfing (he is the one on the far right).

Drama & Designers

Drama is the uniting characteristic behind a few of my favorite designers. First there is classic Vionnet. I love her use of the bias cut and the way the clothing falls on the female form. The dresses seem to float and move as if you are being carried into a room.

Morgan Le Fay (photo above courtesy of Morgan Le Fay). The pleats, cuts, and folds come to life when you put the clothing on. There is intention in the placement of each section and the layers create movement and depth in the dresses.

Marchesa (photo courtesy of Marchesa). The draping is fabulous. I love the use of vivid color, the detail, the imagination. The dresses can transport you to some other glorious place.

There is an ethereal quality to J. Mendel (photo courtesy of J. Mendel). I walk by the store on Madison and would like to just live there. The dresses seem to float by and the organza draping, pleating, calculated positioning of each cut creates a bold statement while not overpowering the beauty of the one who wears the clothes.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed yesterday by Roni Proter and Candice Crawford on their show, the RC Project. This was my 1st studio interview and it was so much fun! Roni and I met last year when she interviewed me for a TV segment, and her co-host Candice and I actually went to high school together, so it was such a fun little reunion of sorts that took place in a very chic sitting area that happened to be in a studio with lots of hot lights and cameras.

Cannon Lewis: What inspired you to write you most recent book Gilded, How Newport Became America's Richest Resort?
Deborah Davis: I have always been fascinated by the opulent lifestyle in Newport, and I wanted to tell the inside story of the city's long and colorful history as the playground of the very, very rich.

CL: Cannon Lewis jewelry reaches a niche audience which I would describe as "refined bohemian." That being said, which of your books would you recommend and why?

DD: Definitely Strapless, the story of the scandal behind the John Singer Sargent painting, Madame X. The book shows that what you wear - in this case a stunning black dress -- can change your life, and it paints a vivid portrait of an enthralling time in history that is surprisingly like today.

CL: As an author you have had the opportunity to act as an observer of so many people's lives through your research and interviews. What are a few of the most important life lessons you have learned from these encounters?

DD: I usually write about people who seem to have everything, but are rarely satisfied, leading me to believe that the greatest gift is not achieving success or fame, but appreciating what you have every day. It sounds like such a cliché, but I have spent so much time studying larger-than-life figures such as Madame X, Truman Capote, and the fabulously rich in Newport, R.I., and I am always surprised to see that happiness eludes them. The lesson is live in the moment, as best you can.

CL: What is one of your favorite summer memories from your childhood?

DD: Waking up very early one summer morning and playing in my Grandmother's backyard, which was a magical place at first light. Her garden seemed enormous (it wasn't, really) and was filled with hiding places -- the Weeping Willow tree, the lilac bushes, the corner where the hedges met the wall -- for an imaginative little girl and her favorite dolls.

CL: Looking back on your career as a writer, wife, and mother is there anything you would have done differently?

DD: Well, I was married at 23, so I couldn't have done that much earlier and I am happily married to the same man, so that choice was correct!. Sometimes I wish that I had started my family when I was younger, but then I might not have the two extraordinary children I have today. As for writing, I have been in training for this job my entire life. On a more practical note, when financial advisers tell you to save a little money each month for college, listen to them. Ouch. Oh, and I wish I had worn more sunblock.

CL: What are some things that you have not done yet but would like to do in your lifetime?

DD: I would like to care for homeless dogs. My win-the-lottery dream is to underwrite a country home for abandoned pets -- a place where they could find comfort, love, and security.

CL: What advice do you have for young people pursuing the field of writing?

DD: They have to learn that good writing is really about re-writing. Put ordinary words on the page and change them again and again, until they get better. And write about what interests you -- if you are genuinely enthusiastic about your subject, your readers will feel the same way.

CL: How would you describe your personal style?

DD: I went to Catholic school as a child and it must have made a big impression on me because I'm all about uniforms. Lot's of black -- in fact ALL black -- clothing with strong, simple lines, and one signature piece of jewelry that says it all.

CL: If you could have one piece of Cannon Lewis jewelry which one would it be and why?

DD: The Captivate Collection has captivated me! I love the pendants because of their beauty, their timelessness, and the great wisdom of the messages they carry. I especially like the one that says "Glean away the wheat, remove it from the shaft. Remove the comfort of the past, a new life is here at last." It is a "forever" piece -- one that would be precious and meaningful everyday, and for a lifetime.

I flew home to Texas this weekend and drove to a small West Texas town for my dear friend's wedding. I wore my boots, ate chicken fried steak, got bitten by mosqitoes, sweated in the heat and took in the slow pace of the town coupled by the overwhelming hospitality. I love it here - it is so quite and still that I have time to really reflect on life and family relationships. I can live anywhere in the world but there is something about Texas that will always have a part of my heart.

The Thrill of the Hunt

So I have received some feedback. A few of you want to know where I find everything else and how I put the outfits all together, and what to do if you are on a budget. So I am going to divulge some of my secrets intermittently.

I am a scavenger. I like hunting and I like finding. If friends ask, I will always tell how much I paid for things IF I got a deal, and when I don't get deals, I don't say anything, and hope my husband doesn't notice.

I don't pay full price for basics. I pay full price for nice fabrics, soft leather, texture, artistry, craftsmanship and detail. But full price is never as fun as finding something - I love the feeling I get when I happen upon something fantastic for less. Hard to explain unless you know what I am talking about...

TJ Maxx - in the designer section I can find some good things. Also their shoes are great. It is hit or miss.
Loehman's NYC - better than TJ Maxx. I have found gorgeous silk scarves, nice hand bags, smaller RTW niche designers who I love, and Cashmere, Cashmere, Cashmere.
Century 21 NYC- also discount but I haven't had as good of luck.
Consignment - takes digging to another level, however I have scored new Phillip Lim w/tags vintage Chanel, St. John, and Dior to name a few.
Daffy's - at 34th street Harold Square NYC. I hate the location, which is probably good so I don't go all the time, however they carry beautiful European children's clothing, children's cashmere, etc. Adult clothing is lacking - so don't go unless you have children.
Sample Sales - these can be amazing.
Ebay - I have found some things, but only when I know exactly what I want and all the details on the item so I don't get scammed.

My godsister, Caroline Cutbirth, (girl on the far left) is in an amazing country band called Stealing Angels. Their single, "He Better be Dead" just debuted on the country charts at #59 Today. I have known her all of my life, and even though when we were little she used to give me "rose gardens" on my arms we moved past that and have had lots of fun memories together and I am so happy for her!

I had a brilliant idea a few days ago. To preface this, I had a baby. My cute tight summer tops of the past are not working out so well these days, and although Core and More is kicking me into shape, I need some outfit forgiveness. After feeling drab for a few months, with the Aha moment being when I wanted to wear workout clothes for the day not because I was working out but because I didn't know what to wear, I took some initiative. I needed some major change without spending everything I have. So I went to Forever 21, stockpiled, and that night put all these outfits together with cards on the hangers saying exactly what to put together for each outfit, since I have about .00000001 minutes in the morning to think about these things with a baby and a dog. So I bring to you my challenge: I am going to wear Forever 21 for 21 days, styled with pieces from my closet and my stunning jewelry, and you guessed it - I will blog about each outfit. Daily.

Sorry about the 2 month blogging hiatus - I wish I could tell you that I was off somewhere Walden style staring at a pond drinking green tea and sketching, but in reality I was running all over the place getting blisters on my feet while trying to finalize the fall line and now I am staring at a blank sketchbook and need to start designing again for spring.
A short re-cap on life:
Sophie dog got a haircut, the bill was $90. Husband says he will cut her hair from now on.
I got a new dress by All Saints (love this brand)
I had a birthday
Husband bought 4 new surfboards
Baby is teething
I am coming to terms with the fact that my shoe size still hasn't returned to its pre-pregnancy size and am remorsefully concluding that shoes are a terrible investment.

Easter at Chelsea Market

I loved Easter when I was little: new dress, new shoes, taking flowers to church to put on the cross, and the eggs. My grandparents had a huge Easter egg hunt at their house, then there was another one at the country club, and then my sister and I would take turns hiding eggs around the house to continue the merriment. My mom had an Easter tree that I helped her make one year and she taught us how to take a needle and blow out the yolks in the eggs and dye them to make ornaments. I even took a class one year to learn to make Czech Easter eggs.

But my favorite eggs of all were the sugar eggs. I remember having small ones with ducks floating in a pond of icing, large ones with a family rabbits in a grassy field, and I even got a kit one year with the supplies to make my own sugar eggs. I saw these eggs today at the Chelsea Market and my heart jumped - for a second I felt like I was age five again and the Easter Bunny was real and my stress list consisted of not being allowed to wear my new white shoes yet and my basket being too small to hold all of my eggs...

My friend Hannah and I wandered in this store today. I would like to just move right in. This is an eclectic mix of Charles Nolan's own clothing, vintage clothing, jewelry, shoes, and home furnishings. The decor is so cool - the fireplace in the picture is actually a flat screen TV with a video of a fire burning. I left with two vintage findings, Hannah with some jewelry, my name on a mailing list, and a feeling of joy over my new discovery.

A Reflection on Age and Style

I love my afternoon walks in the park with Sophie. I am able to clear my mind and take in what is around me: the textures, the colors, and the way the sunlight hits the trees is relaxing and refreshing.

Today I saw this lady sitting on a park bench - she had a certain twinkle in her eye, and I don't usually walk up to strangers, but I did. Meet Lily Axel: black crocodile loafers, camel hair coat, red cashmere scarf, lipstick and a brown mink beret. I asked if I could take her picture for a piece I wanted to write, she agreed, but wanted to see what I wrote, so I am meeting her at 5pm tomorrow at the park with a copy of this post.

I was struck with this notion that there is a type of beauty that is only found in aging. The bark on trees becomes more distinctive in time, good architecture on buildings only gets better as cracks form, and marble steps get smoother, rounder and shinier as they are stepped on year after year. Lily has a depth to her style that cannot be replicated because it requires time. She is a reminder to embrace each season of my life and when I grow up, I want to be found in a mink beret and red lipstick sitting outside in style, imbibing the world around me.

The candles from Royal Apothic have clean, subtle scents that won't overpower a room. I would buy one for the handmade packaging alone. The "High Tea" fragrance is inspired by Earl Grey tea while "Venetian Grove" smells distinctly of currants. They're available at Fosters in Philadelphia and Anthropologie stores as well. They're a great gift!

Soho Findings - Aero NYC

Soho is home to some of the most amazing interior design stores imaginable. When the designer Thomas O'Brien opened his shop Aero on Broome street, I was beyond excited. O'Brien is known for his "warm modernism" aesthetic, and the store sells everything from refurbished vintage furniture to exquisite objets d'art. While prices can escalate quickly, Aero sells many home accessories well within reach.

Madeleine Macaroons

The macaroons at Madeleine Patisserie on 23rd street in Chelsea are one of my favorite desserts. They are sinfully good but still manage to be light at the same time. The bakery offers so many different flavors in a rainbow of colors, ranging from classic chocolate or pistachio to exotic variations like rose, fig, and pina colata. When it's available, the caramel fleur de sel is the absolute best.

I was downtown today, and after strolling briefly (it was 22 degrees!) on the Highline, I wandered into Chelsea Market. It's a beautiful, industrial space that used to be home to the National Biscuit Company but now houses lots of retail stores and restaurants, as well as the Food Network offices. Friedman's is my favorite lunch place there, and Eleni's has amazing cupcakes and cookies. But I passed both of those up for a cup of the Genmai-cha at the T Salon. It's Japanese green tea with puffed brown rice. I also tried the vegan coconut cake - surprisingly good! I could spend hours in Chelsea Market and never get bored.

Something Sketchy

Angelio Batle sculpts these objects out of graphite in his San Francisco studio. I stumbled across them when I was wandering around ABC Carpets & Home, and immediatly fell in love. When I used to sketch more, I would spend a long time picking out my pencils and I would get excited about finding that special graphite pencil that produces the exact shade I needed. So when I came across these sculptures I had to have one. Not only are they beautiful and nature inspired, but I can draw with them. So, meet my new pencil. I can't wait to see what it will produce.

While I definitely don't think champagne should only be enjoyed on New Year's Eve, tonight is undeniably synonymous with the bubbly stuff. I'm looking forward to 2010, but in honor of 2009, here is a recession-friendly list of great champagnes under $40. As it gets colder outside, I'm finding new ways to warm up. The hot chocolate at Mariebelle in Soho definitely does the trick. I get the "spicy" one flavored with cinnamon, nutmeg, and chipotle. I know it sounds a little strange, but it's delicious. It goes perfectly with a few of their amazingly beautiful chocolates. My favorite is the champagne. It's a perfect last minute gift!

New New News: Leaf Cross, Tree Pose & Grow Necklaces

Here Are some great pendants that are some of my personal favorites. The Leaf Cross has a tiny diamond in the center and the carving is beautiful. I've given these as baby gifts and also wear one myself - its so simple but eye catching. The pendant is about 1/4 inch tall.

The Tree Pose Necklace is another one of my loves. One side depicts a carved tree with a tiny diamond and the other side is carved to say "tree pose." Inside the 1/2 tall pendant are faceted London blue topaz, sky blue topaz, and rhodolite garnet that rattle around. The colors will sparkle and catch your eye, and its so fun to wear.

The largest necklace is the Grow Necklace, with one side depicting a leaf vine and the other is carved to say Grow. There are two options for the stones that rattle inside: one version has green apetites and tourmalines, the other version has moonstone, pink pearl and pink tourmaline. This pendant is about 1 inch tall and hangs on a 36 inch chain which has a leaf with a phrase written on it.

I have blogged before about how much I like peacocks. Here is another peacock inspired design. The earrings measure about 1 inch tall, with a beautiful London blue topaz sparkling from within. The peacock earrings will be featured in the Website Window Event on Monday, September 28th.

If you loved the Medium Willow Earrings, here is another option for you ... LARGE Willow Earrings. These earrings will take any outfit to a new level. These earrings have a tiny diamond set in them and measure about 1 3/4 inches tall by 3/4 inch wide and come in two options, sterling silver with 14k gold overlay, often called vermeil, which is then satin-finished for a smooth shine. If you want something to go with the leather jacket trend this fall, or are just drawn to silver in general, the satin finished silver might be your option of choice. Either way, they are amazing earrings, and you will be stopped and asked about them when you wear them.

Every few months there are events on the website where certain pieces of jewelry are reduced in price for a short two day window. After the two days, the price goes back to the retail price. This is a way I can test the market with some of my newest designs, and offer you a really good price on the latest jewelry, so everyone wins. These Earrings are Fabulous! I've been wearing mine almost every day, and they are a great size (drop is about 1 1/4 inch tall) which means you can wear them with just about anything. They are sterling silver with 14k gold overlay, often called vermeil, which is then satin-finished for a smooth shine. There is a tiny diamond set in each earring, which adds a nice sparkle, and the earrings have a tiny line texture, which makes them just sparkle. And the best part? My TV Interview with Roni Proter

The Economics of Jewelry: as Seen at Age 5

I've been spending time today with my 5 & 8 year old cousins who want to know how everything works. They asked me if I use real stones for my jewelry. I said yes, that I use diamonds and sapphires. Then the 5 year old's eyes got really big and she said "you must be very, very rich to buy those." I wish life was that simple.

Cannon Lewis Now or Never earring jackets were featured in the style guide of the Dallas Morning New on Friday, June 5 2009.

The Now or Never earring jackets are a part of the Life Collection and have tiny diamonds and at first glance look like an abstract cut out in gold, but then look closely, and the word "Now" and "Never" are in full view. The leaf hoops earrings that the Now or Never jackets come on can be purchase separatly in gold or silver for a two-toned effect.

Hey Peacock

I love this ring. I love that it lays flat. I love that it has black diamonds & white diamonds. I love that I'm actually wearing it right now as I type.

I love peacocks. My grandparents had peacocks as pets when I was growing up. I used to feed them out of my hand (see picture above of me at age 2). I could look out my window and see the male peacocks with their rattling feathers spread trying to woo the ladies. We used peacock feathers as cat toys - my grandfather named them cat fishing poles.

I love symbols. The peacock feather was used in Dutch Vanitas Paintings as a symbol of vanity. Look next time you go to a museum.

This is why I love the peacock ring.

A Little On Edge

This pendant is one of my favorites. I look and feel the edge increase when I wear it. The stone is rutilated quartz from Brazil, and I bought it but didn't know what I wanted to do with it, so I put it in my stone box and would look at it time to time, but no idea had come to me. The cut is so cool, and it looks like there is a black cross inside, and it is a big stone - about 3 inches tall.

About a year later, I woke up and had this design in my head. On the back it is engraved: "The outside is only a movement of" and then there is engraving that you can see from the front of the pendant, looking behind the stone, "The symphony within." I put some orange sapphires on it to bring out the orange in the stone, and a few black and white diamonds. I like how the silver grasps the stone and looks like claws on the front.

I don't really want to part with it, because I'm never going to be able to make another one like this. But if you promise it will go to a good home, and when you get really old you will give it to someone who will appreciate the detail of the piece and the effort and hours I put into making this exactly right with the colors and balance, I will consider your offer.
